Wildlife Talks at Manx Museum 15 August 2005

The Friends of the Curraghs Wildlife Park and the Manx Bat Group have jointly arranged a pair of talks on wildlife topics for the end of the summer school holidays, at the Manx Museum, on Wednesday 31st August and Friday 2nd September.

Clem Fisher is Curator of Birds and Mammals at National Museums Liverpool and has travelled extensively in the course of her work. She has visited the Isle of Man on numerous occasions, to assist with bat surveys and natural history. She has an extensive photo library of bats appearing in art, from cultures and countries around the world, and will be talking on “Bats in Art” at the Manx Museum, 7.30 pm Wednesday 31st August.

For 2002, Clem prepared an exhibition on the development of the menagerie at Knowsley Hall. The 13th Earl of Derby was an avid animal collector and sponsored John Gould to collect and paint animals in Australia for him. He also employed Edward Lear to paint portraits of other animals at Knowlsey, during which commission he wrote The Owl and the Pussycat for Lord Derby’s grandchildren. Lord Derby amassed a staggering collection of living animals - at his death there were 1272 birds and 345 mammals at Knowsley, many extremely rare. Several species are named after him – Stanley crane, Derby eland – and his programme of breeding species that had never been kept in captivity continues to be admired by modern-day zoo curators.

Clem will give a talk on”The Derby Connection – the Knowsley Menagerie and Aviary” at the Manx Museum at 7.30 pm Friday 2nd September.

Both talks are open to the public and admission is free of charge.
