Isle of Man hosts Standards Group 11 January 2006

The National Standards GroupThe Isle of Man recently hosted meetings of the National Standards Group for the first time. The meetings were attended by delegates from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Mr Maxwell Collister, Secretary of the Registration and Grading Commission Department of Tourism and Leisure, represented the Isle of Man at the meetings. He commented:

‘The Group comprises quality standards managers representing all the national tourist boards of the United Kingdom and Ireland. We meet regularly to develop and exchange new initiatives for improving quality standards and consumer understanding across the tourism hospitality sector.’

Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, commented:

‘It is important for the Island to be on this national group. The quality standards sector is experiencing rapid transformation and challenges and the Island needed, not just to be abreast of, but have an input into future changes. This was necessary so the Island could develop quality initiatives and schemes, either compulsory or voluntary, in all areas of the hospitality sector to meet the increasingly discerning quality and service expectations of visitors to the Island.’

Mr Douglas Jordan, Group Chairman, explained:

‘Increasingly the national tourist boards were working together much closer and the Group was one example of this. Indeed 2006 sees the launch of common ratings standards for serviced tourist accommodation agreed by the tourist boards of England, Scotland and Wales which Guernsey and the Isle of Man are also planning to adopt.’

    He added:

‘On behalf of the Group I would like to thank the Isle of Man and in particular the Minister, Registration and Grading Commission and the Regency Hotel in Douglas for their warm hospitality.’
