CONGRATULATIONS to the Isle of Man College for having been recognised for the third time as meeting the Investors in People standards, and, in addition, for also achieving the Leadership and Management Model.

Picture shows Principal Ray Smith receiving both the Investors in People and Leadership & Management award from Alex Downie DTI Minister, on behalf of all the College staff

This new Leadership and Management assessment was conducted in parallel with a successful Post Recognition Review. This makes it over five years now that the College has achieved the overall IIP prestigious National award.

The Isle of Man College has developed further its very good reputation. The approach to leadership and management within the College has evolved with the organisation’s progress and has focussed on setting high targets and providing the support necessary for people to achieve them. The report made very clear that the Principal leads by example and encourages his managers to do likewise. The culture of the College and the approach to Leadership and Management has had a significant effect on its overall success.

The College received a detailed follow up report from the assessor, which was full of supportive comments. Some of the evidence the assessor saw as particularly good practice, is as follows:

    • ? Management training and development has contributed to the performance of managers at all levels and has also supported their career development, as evidenced by several examples of internal promotion
    • ? Good levels of morale and motivation are evident from the high number of positive, and often unsolicited, comments from interviewees ? The College’s Strategic Plan is well constructed and demonstrates elements of very good practice
    • ? The strong commitment to supporting the learning and development of all staff across the College has been further reinforced since the last assessment.
“Having maintained Investors in People status for over five years and now gaining the Leadership and Management assessment is wonderful and is a very positive recognition for the College and the work of all staff. These achievements help us to continue to improve our services to our students”, said Ray Smith, Principal.

Given that its only a few weeks ago that Ballakermeen High School became the very first organisation in the Island to be recognised as meeting the Investors in People Model for Leadership & Management, with the Isle of Man College now becoming only the second to do so – this is a true “one-two” for Education in the Island.
