Dudley Butt joins the DLGE 13 March 2006

Member of the Legislative Council, Dudley Butt, has been appointed by the Council of Ministers as an additional Member of the Department of Local Government and the Environment.

Dudley Butt was elected to the Legislative Council in March 2005 and will continue to be a Member of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry and a Member of the Department of Trade & Industry.

Minister for Local Government and the Environment, John Rimington, MHK, said,

“I am really pleased that Dudley Butt has agreed to accept appointment to my Department and to take on responsibility for waste operational matters. Since my appointment as Minister, I have taken personal responsibility for waste operational matters because I have not had a Member of the Department to whom I could delegate this portfolio. This is an extremely busy and diverse Department and waste management is such an important subject that it requires a stronger political focus which he will now be able to give it. Waste management is a highly specialist area where there are numerous problems to be addressed and no easy solutions to any of them. Difficult and, at times, unpopular decisions have to be taken in the national interest and this will be especially important as the Department continues to carry out a fundamental review of the Island’s Waste Strategy”.

Speaking about his appointment, Dudley Butt, MLC, commented,

“I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity of broadening my experience by joining the Department of Local Government and the Environment. I do not underestimate the difficult challenges that lie ahead but hope to be able to make a positive contribution to driving matters forward. I have a lot to learn in the next few weeks and I approach the whole area with an open mind”.

Prior to becoming a Member of Tynwald in 2005, Dudley Butt was a serving Police Officer. He joined the Isle of Man Constabulary in 1962 and rose to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector. He lists his interests as football, cricket, golf, motorcycling, writing, photography, walking, classic vehicles, gardening and the countryside.

The other Members of the Department of Local Government and the Environment are Clare Christian, MLC (with delegated responsibility for Planning and Building Control); Anne Craine, MHK (with delegated responsibility for Estates & Housing); and Bill Henderson, MHK (with delegated responsibility for Environment, Safety & Health).
