Corporate Response introduced to Pollution Control Incidents 20 April 2006

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has announced that its ability to respond quickly to pollution incidents has been enhanced, thanks to inter-Departmental co-operation, with the Fire and Rescue Service agreeing to provide support by carrying “grab packs” on all appliances.

The grab packs contain an inflatable boom, absorbent materials and sealing putty to cope with the most common incidents usually involving vehicle accidents, chemical spills and the uncontrolled release of hazardous materials into the environment. This provides a rapid first-aid type response to pollution incidents allowing containment and prevention of pollutants entering watercourses.

Minister for Local government and the Environment, John Rimington, MHK, said,

“I am delighted with this development which shows a spirit of cooperation across Government. We are impressed by the environmental awareness of the Fire and Rescue Service in agreeing so willingly to support my Department’s Environmental Protection Officer with this development. In reality this will provide an environmental emergency response capability on every front line appliance which extends our pollution prevention service enormously”.
