River Management Project Officer

Dr Karen Galtress has been appointed to undertake a three-year project which will promote best practice on the Island’s watercourses. She has embarked on the project with effect from Monday 26th April.

This is a joint initiative between three Government Department to provide guidance and advice to landowners about preventing flooding or scouring; enhancing fisheries and conserving wildlife; and maintaining the quality of water.

Dr Karen Galtress

Dr Galtress can be contacted on 450736. She will be working from the Inland Fisheries section of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Three Government Departments – the Department of Transport; the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; and the Department of Local Government and the Environment – work closely together because of the overlap between their responsibilities, and the way that something done for one purpose may impact on other purposes.

Dr Galtress holds a degree in Environmental Biology from Liverpool University. She was awarded her doctorate for her research on Sulby River. Her research was undertaken on behalf of the same three Government Departments, in association with the Manx Rivers Improvement Association (MRIA), to which she has been Secretary.

Dr Galtress’s work on Sulby River has provided valuable information which is now to be given wider application in managing the Island’s other watercourses as well.
