Volunteers Week - ‘Back to the Floor’ 17 May 2006

The Department of Health and Social Security is delighted to announce that Noble’s Hospital in association with National Volunteers Week, is celebrating the contribution of its volunteers during a week of activities from the 22nd – 26th May.

The main purpose of the week is to reward, recruit and to recognise the valuable role of the volunteer.

Steve Rodan MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“Volunteers perform a vital role in ensuring visitors a pleasant experience whilst at Noble’s Hospital. I actively support the activities taking place this week and along with senior colleagues within the Department, will be volunteering my own services to the cause.”

Over the past year, the number of volunteers has increased at Noble’s Hospital with the opening of the Macmillan Cancer Information Centre and the introduction of volunteers for the Arts Programme.

Using the theme of recognition, members of the Health Services have been invited to take part in a ‘Back to the Floor’ exercise. Steve Rodan MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security, David Killip Chief Executive, Mr Norman McGregor Edwards Director of Health and Social Strategy Performance and Anne Craine MHK, Member for Health are all taking time out during the week to visit the hospital and ‘volunteer’ to undertake an activity to endorse this event. Furthermore, a number of hospital employees, from mangers to nurses, will also become ‘volunteers’ for a few hours during the week.

There are many diverse roles undertaken by volunteers, including visiting wards with the library and providing a welcoming service for patients and visitors at the main entrance.

The Department hopes that who ever takes part in the ‘Back to the Floor’ initiative will help to promote a better understanding of the way volunteers are firmly positioned within the Public and Hospital relationship.
