New Vintage Motorcycle Display at the Manx Museum 22 May 2006

In readiness for this year’s TT festival, a new display of vintage motorcycles will be on show at the Manx Museum in Douglas from Saturday 27th May 2006.

There will be four new motorcycles on display: the 1922 AJS, which once belonged to Canon E.H.Stenning; the 1921 250cc Levis ridden by Dr C.H. Hopwood; Bertie Rowell’s 1924 Sunbeam, and the 1937 Norton Manx 40M ridden in that year’s MGP by Albert Moule. Norton Manx 40M

Matthew Richardson, Curator of Social History for Manx National Heritage, said:

“Motorcycling has played a tremendously important part in the recent history of the Island, and apart from the fact that these lovely vintage machines are interesting in their own right, each motorcycle has a special connection to the Island’s history.
Stenning was a very important figure in the Auto Cycle Union. Rowell was a vice-president of the Manx Motorcycle Club, whilst Moule’s TT career was one of the longest, spanning 19 years. Hopwood was an early TT competitor.”

The motorcycles were previously on display at the now closed Murray Motor Museum at the Bungalow, and Manx National Heritage is grateful to the British Motorcycle Charitable Trust and the Friends of Manx National Heritage for the financial assistance which made their acquisition possible.

The Manx Museum is the starting point to the award-winning ‘Story of Mann’ and is open from Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm. Admission is free.
