New health promotion team for Department of Education 19 June 2006

The Department of Education have formed a new health promotion team called Skimmee Gien Mie (Manx for ‘Wellbeing Committee’). This team will be working with all the schools on the island from September 2006.

There have been no new appointments to the Department of Education team as Skimmee Gien Mie formalises the partnership between existing members of the Life Education Team, Drug and Alcohol Liaison Officer and the Tobacco and Sexual Health Coordinator.

Skimmee Gien Mie will work together with statutory and non-statutory organisations to continue to improve collaboration and partnerships. To support this new development funding will be jointly contributed by the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Social security

Each team member is responsible for a specialist subject, such as: -
  • ? Healthy Eating (Mal Keary)
  • ? Drugs and Alcohol (Orla McGlinchey)
  • ? Tobacco and Sexual Health (Lyz Moore)
  • ? Emotional Health and Wellbeing (Marilyn Payne)
  • ? Physical Activity (Lindsay Riordan)

The long-term aim of Skimmee Gien Mie is to improve the health and lifestyles of all young people. One of the duties of the Department of Education is to promote high standards of education and to support and challenge schools to continue to address all aspects of health. Skimmee Gien Mie will contribute to the agenda for schools to explore how to promote health and healthy schools, by appointing each school with a Health adviser from the Skimmee Gien Mie team.

The team recently attended a presentation by Health Education Advisers from Merseyside, England who are very experienced in assisting schools throughout Merseyside on all aspects of promoting a healthy school philosophy. They will be discussing their experience of how to support schools with new health initiatives and delivering healthy education messages.Merseyside Team
