'Excellent Job' as Laxey highway improvements are completed ahead of schedule 19 June 2006

The Department of Transport has pulled out the stops and completed the highway improvements at New Road/Mines Road, Laxey, a month ahead of schedule, in readiness for the TT festival, one of the busiest times of the year for shops and businesses in the village.

The work has been completed early despite the work being suspended for the duration of the Windy Corner scheme: this is thanks to DoT employees working through weekends and Bank Holidays, and the recent good weather.

The newly created crossing at LaxeyThe newly completed scheme provides several additional safety measures including a controlled crossing and links to help pedestrians cross between Laxey MER station and Mines Road, reconstructed rail crossings and carriageways between the two level crossings and a new bus stop and shelter at the point immediately before the bus routes split.

Hon Phil Braidwood MHK, Transport Minister,

‘The Department would like to thank everyone affected by the work – members of the public and local businesses, for their patience and forbearance with the work on this vital scheme’.

Local Garff MHK Steve Rodan has added his thanks to the Department too:

“I am grateful to the Department for doing their utmost to ensure the roadworks were completed before the TT. It has not been an easy time in recent months, but I am sure the people of Laxey will agree that an excellent job has been done with the new roadway, footpaths and crossing.”

The newly completed scheme provides:-

  • A controlled (Zebra) crossing on New Road to permit pedestrians to cross the road in safety between Laxey MER station and Mines Road.
  • A footway link across the tramlines from the south west side of the controlled crossing to the existing footway in Mines Road.
  • Reconstructed rail crossings at New Road and Mines Road
  • Reconstructed and realigned carriageway and footway between the two level crossings
  • A new bus stop and shelter at the point immediately before the bus routes split.
