Energy Costs Task Force 11 August 2006

A Government task force should be established to address the issue of rising energy costs, the Council of Ministers decided yesterday (Thursday, August 10, 2006).

The Energy Costs Task Force will look at ways of minimising the social and economic impact of recent increases. It will be required to produce an interim report to the Council of Ministers by mid-September and a report to Tynwald, via the Council of Ministers, for the October 2006 sitting.

The group will be chaired by Trade and Industry Minister Alex Downie MLC and will include officer representatives from the Treasury, Chief Secretary’s Office, Department of Trade & Industry, Department of Health & Social Security, Department of Local Government & the Environment, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Manx Electricity Authority.

Chief Minister Donald Gelling MLC explained:

‘This task force will build upon existing Government initiatives relating to energy prices, such as the Low Income Working Group. It will take a broad view of the issue, including the implications for business and a range of domestic users, as well as the scope for greater energy efficiency.
Rising energy costs are obviously a matter of public concern in the Isle of Man, as they are elsewhere. It is important for Government to gain a clear picture of the nature and scale of the issue as it affects the Island, and the options for action.’

The remit of the Energy Costs Task Force is to consider what actions Government could take to respond to the recent increases in energy costs, in order to minimise its impact on the Islands economy and social wellbeing through:

• support to domestic and commercial users in most need, and

• means by which assistance can be provided to improve energy efficiency within Government, homes and businesses.
