Major First-Time Buyer Scheme Commences in Douglas 11 August 2006

The Department of Local Government has announced that work on a site at Johnny Watterson’s Lane, Douglas, has commenced following the signing of a development agreement with Dandara Contracting Limited.

The thirty months’ project will result in the phased delivery of 116 first-time buyer houses. There will be 61 three-bedroomed houses, 37 two-bedroomed houses and 18 two-bedroomed apartments.

Mrs. Anne Craine, MHK, Member in the Department responsible for Estates and Housing, said

“I am delighted that this important project has now commenced”. She went on to say, “These 116 homes are an important addition to the 300 first-time buyer homes that have already been built and will contribute significantly to achieving our target of building a total of 650 approved homes by the end of 2008”.

Local Architects, Ellis Brown, have produced high-quality designs which draw inspiration from the arts and crafts movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The informal, low- density layout responds sensitively to the location of the site. A high proportion of the houses will be semi-detached and have private parking. The development will be well- landscaped with formal and informal spaces for public use.

Seamus Nugent, a Director of the Dandara Group of companies said

“This is another example of the company working in partnership with the Department to increase the supply of affordable homes for first-time buyers. This exciting new development will bring our contribution to building approved first-time buyer homes to over 200 properties”. The Estates and Housing Customer Service Team has already contacted applicants, on the First-Time Buyer Register, to begin the process of allocating new homes.
