Road Closed After Collapsed Retaining Wall Leads To Saftey Fears 24 November 2006

A section of the D23 Rhenab Road at Ballaglass Glen, Maughold, has been closed after a retaining wall collapsed.

The Department’s Highways Division was notified on Tuesday, November 21st that a section of the wall just below the entrance to the Ballaglass Glen car park had collapsed into the river below.

Nigel Foster, Highways Services Manager, explained:

‘The retaining wall supports the highway. Without the wall, there is a danger that the weight of any vehicles on the road will cause it to collapse into the river.’

The failure was caused by the river undermining the retaining wall foundations.

Mr Foster said:

‘Work to repair the damage is scheduled to commence this Monday (November 27th) and our initial assessment is that the work should take approximately two weeks. However, this will depend on the conditions which we find once excavation work commences.’

It’s envisaged that the work will involve placing a new concrete foundation and rebuilding the wall.

Signs notifying motorists of the closure have been placed at either end of the D23 Rhenab Road. However, access to the car park at Ballaglass Glen has not been affected by the closure.
