Leading Authority on the Traditional Festivals of the British Isles to give Public Lecture 22 December 2006

Manx National Heritage will be hosting a lecture by Professor Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at Bristol University and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries. The lecture will be the fourth in Manx National Heritage’s successful winter lecture programme and will take place at the Manx Museum lecture theatre on Friday 19th January 2007 at 7.30pm.

The Lecture, entitled Stations of the Sun: The traditional festivals of the British Isles, promises to shed light on the ancient festivals of the British Isles and how they were traditionally celebrated. Professor Hutton will also explain how these festivals have come down to us in the present day and how our modern ritual year compares.

Professor Hutton, who is a leading authority on ancient and medieval paganism, has also written a plethora of books on a wide variety of historical topics including the text ‘The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain’.

Professor Ronald Hutton comments:

“The lecture will make a tour of six of the greatest seasonal feasts of the traditional British, Irish and Manx year and in the process describe the nature and importance of each, the main customs associated with them and how they have developed over time. The talk will end by asking what the ritual year is for us now, as modern people living in quite a new sort of society.”

The lecture will start at 7.30pm on Friday 19 January and will be held at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge.

The Manx Museum is part of the award-winning Story of Mann and is open all year from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with the exceptions of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. The Manx Museum will also be closing at 3:45pm on Saturday 23rd and 30th December.
