Young artists' work on show at top gallery 19 January 2007

YOUNG artists from St Ninian's High School have made the top 20 of a prestigious national art competition.

The work of six students from the Year Seven art club could make the final of the Tate Galleries and Unilever competition when judges make their decision at the end of the month.Arts students with their entry

Along with other shortlisted work, the students' efforts are on display at Tate Liverpool but if they go further in the contest, they will move to Tate Modern in London.

Rachael Killen, a teacher at St Ninian's, said: 'The theme of the competition was Dreams and Reality. Pupils decided they would create a head which would open to show images of their dreams and nightmares.

'We used a kitchen cupboard to create the box in which the dream objects would be hung and then replaced the doors with doors in the shape of a face, decorating it to make it appear as if the person was a creature from a nightmare.

'We stuck our own creations inside the head, along with some Christmas tree lights to add to the dream-like effect. The result was effective both in terms of aesthetics and in terms of raising pupils' confidence and esteem at having produced such a piece of art based entirely on their own ideas.'

The students are David Connick, Ben Ingham, Gareth Heywood, Emma Hughes, Erin McMaster and Jack Gibney.

Rachael said: 'Such activities, where our pupils are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning and development and are given a chance to use their creativity, proves the success of Freedom to Flourish at St Ninian's.'
