Local Government and Environment Minister announces Delegation of Duties 31 January 2007

The Minister for Local Government and the Environment, John Shimmin, MHK, has announced the delegation of duties to his political colleagues within the Department of Local Government and the Environment.

Claire Christian, MLC, is responsible for the Planning & Building Control Directorate, which includes any functions exercised by the Department in relation to development control; building control; mapping; registered buildings; and conservation areas.

Dudley Butt, MLC, is responsible for the Waste Operations Management Unit, which includes functions requiring to be exercised by the Department in relation to the planning, operation and after-care of landfill sites; waste minimisation, recovery, re-use and recycling initiatives; and the review and operation of waste materials subsidy schemes.

Juan Watterson, MHK, is responsible for the Estates & Housing Directorate, which includes housing allocations and repairs, architectural services, Government properties and landbank portfolio and, in particular, its functions under the House Improvement and Energy Conservation Scheme 2005 and the House Purchase Assistance Scheme 2004.

The Minister retains responsibility for the Environment, Safety & Health Directorate, which includes food protection, housing standards, environmental protection and health and safety; and the Corporate Services Directorate which is responsible, amongst other things, for local government, financial management and legislation and policy. The Minister also has responsibility for the Government Analyst’s Laboratory.

In welcoming his new team, the Minister commented:

“Since my arrival in the Department it has been an enormous benefit to have the experience and continuity of Mrs. Christian, MLC, and Mr. Butt, MLC, retaining their important roles in charge of Planning and Waste Operations, respectively. Mr. Watterson, MHK, and myself have been extremely impressed with the welcome we have received and the quality of the officers with whom we are serving. I believe the team at DLGE is an ideal position to build upon the considerable achievements of my predecessor, Mr. John Rimington, and the team which he was proud to lead”.
