Jurby poets to appear in print 5 February 2007

YOUNG poets at Jurby School are to appear in print.

The school entered A Pocketful of Rhyme, a contest run by Peterborough-based Young Writers, last term.

The annual competition, for seven to 11-year-olds, boosted literacy skills by encouraging pupils to read, write and enjoy poetry.

Head teacher Carol Beck said 43 pupils from Key Stage 2 took part, penning poems on all kinds of topics, ranging from the environment and holidays to pets.

Mrs Beck said today:

‘We have just heard that 27 children have had their poetry chosen to be entered into a book called A Pocketful of Rhyme – British Isles. ‘We are thrilled that more than half our entries have made it into the book. The school, children and parents are delighted and proud.’

The book, one of several anthologies resulting from the competition, will contain around 170 poems.

It will be published on April 30, priced £14.99, but copies can be ordered in advance for £12.99.
