Further Investment in Jurby 12 March 2007

Tynwald is being asked to approve funding of £1.79m to progress the fourth phase of the refurbishment of the Bretney Estate in Jurby.

The Department of Local Government and the Environment has already progressed three phases at a total cost of £1.65m which included central heating, doors and windows and external work to walls and roofs.

Mr Juan Watterson MHK who is responsible for Estates and Housing said “The Department’s housing and architectural staff have consulted closely with the tenants on the Estate. The most recent consultation included a very successful two days when over 75% of the households visited the show house. The staff are now discussing choices of kitchens, bathrooms and decorations with each tenant on a personal basis”.

Tenants will be moved to decant properties for a few weeks whilst the work is carried out inside their homes.

Richard Senior, Director of Estates and Housing said “It is anticipated that this phase and the final phase of environmental works will be completed towards the end of 2008, bringing total expenditure on the 64 homes to £4.00m.

He went on to say that further investment is programmed for Jurby including environmental improvements to the Threshold Estate, development of plots for sale and new housing on the former army camp, starter factory units and a £2m upgrade of the infrastructure on the industrial estate.

Minister John Shimmin MHK said “This is substantial Government investment which along with the new prison, shows that the commitment made by Tynwald in 2003, following the publication of the Jurby Village Discussion Document, is being driven forward by my Department in partnership with the Departments of Trade and Industry and Tourism and Leisure. I now hope that private investors such as industrialists and housing developers will also contribute to delivering our exciting plans for the future of Jurby”.
