School stages Cultural Week 2 May 2007

BALLASALLA School is staging a Cultural Week from Monday, May 14.

Rushen Abbey, the former Cistercian monastery run by Manx National Heritage, will form the backdrop for many of the workshops and activities.

Pupils will learn about the integral role of Rushen Abbey in the social history of the Isle of Man. They will examine artefacts and listen to music played there in the 1900s. They will use air-dried clay to recreate and paint tiles discovered at the Abbey.

Pupils will also find out what early writing teaches us about history by examining the Chronicles of the Kings of Mann and the Isles – significant as one of the earliest written accounts of the Isle of Man and the only manuscript documenting its medieval history from a Manx perspective.

They will use goose quills to make simple bookmarks. They will also set off on a challenge to solve the historic riddle of the Rushen Abbey site while hunting strawberry clues.

Younger pupils will, meanwhile, have fun playing lawn games such as croquet and bowls and will use the Abbey’s interactive area to for arch-building, mosaic tile-making and calligraphy.

The week also includes visits to school by several local experts who will be teaching the children some traditional skills. Opportunities have also been planned for visits to other places of interest.

Head teacher Jacqueline Barrow said:

‘Our aim is that by the end of the week the children will have enjoyed the opportunity to experience many different aspects of their heritage.’
