School's wheelie big bank holiday effort 3 May 2007

Eleven staff from St Ninian’s High School are cycling from John O’Groats to Land's End this weekend in aid of the school's charity, Mad4CiU.

The idea is the brainchild of Steve Watt, who is responsible for persuading many staff over several years to take on crazy challenges.

The staff are being joined by friends and a representative of Barclays Bank, Mark Bassett, who has been sponsored to ride by his work collegues. The bank is matching him with pound for pound sponsorship. The cyclists set off

Two mini buses, drivers and riders will depart the Isle of Man thanks to support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company on Friday evening. On reaching the UK, one will turn left and one right.

When they reach their respective starting points at the extremities of the UK, the riders will ride in hourly stints until they reach Heysham - hopefully in time to catch the 2am sailing on Bank Holiday Monday.

The challenge has received generous support from the partners at Crossley’s Accountants in Ballasalla, who have provided T-shirts and 50p per mile towards the successful completion of the ride.

Art teacher and rider Stuart Mason has designed the art work on the T-shirts.

During the last week, students at the school have been buying bracelets designed and put together by Dean Greenland (a rider and teacher of CDT) , Mr Watt (a physics teacher) and his tutor group.

The school is trying to raise £30,000 this year towards the construction of a school in Uganda. It is hoped the stunt will swell the coffers of the Mad4CIU appeal by £2,000.
