First ever Junior Hockey Prize Evening a huge success! 23 May 2007

The Price Waterhouse Coopers junior hockey league reached the end of its first season with the first ever junior presentation evening held at Douglas Masonic Hall on Saturday 19 May.

The evening saw almost 200 people attending the evening from the 21 teams that have taken part in this year’s events.

Manx Radio presenter Tim Glover was the speaker for the evening and introduced all the awards and prize winners during the presentations.

The first awards of the night were for the leagues themselves; teams being called up in reverse order and each player received a Manx Hockey Association medal for taking part. The winning team also received a cup to mark their achievement. The league winners were as follows:

Under 11 Boys: Castletown Hockey Club

Under 11 Girls: Vikings Hockey Club

Under 13 Boys: Valkyrs Hockey Club

Under 13 Girls: King Williams College

The trophies were presented by Mr Ian Clague and Mr Peter Craig of Price Waterhouse Coopers.

The playing season had been rounded off with a junior hockey tournament for under 11 and under 13 teams and Mr Clague and Mr Craig again presented the winning teams with their shields. The winning teams were:

Under 11 Boys: Valkyrs Hockey Club

Under 11 Girls: Vikings Hockey Club

Under 13 Boys: Valkyrs Hockey Club

Under 13 Girls: Cronkbourne Bacchanalians

The final two awards for the evening were for the Manx Hockey Associations ‘Most improved male and female under 13 player of the year’ and were presented by the Chairman of the Manx Hockey Association, Mr James Shimmin. The prizes for these two awards both received £25 to put towards new hockey equipment and the winners were:

Steven Lowe of Valkyrs Hockey Club.

Jennifer Vernon-Browne of Cronkbourne Bacchanalians

Mr Shimmin, Mr Clague and Mr Craig all said what a fantastic event it was to celebrate the progression of Junior hockey on the Island and that they were happy to support the leagues into the next season, where working is currently being done to introduce an under 15 section!

The awards were followed by a disco for the players (and some energetic parents!) and the Manx Hockey Association would like to thank Price Waterhouse Coopers (sponsors), Gary Corkhill (Junior League Coordinator) and Dominic Hobdell (Hockey Development Officer), the Douglas Masonic Hall (venue providers), Tim Glover for directing the evening’s proceedings, Henry and Sarah Qualtrough (DJs) and all the coaches, parents and players for their hard work over the 2006-2007 season.
