Mill Road Yard, Peel 10 July 2007

In September 2007, the Department decided that one of its priorities for the future should be to establish and manage a programme of works to improve and upgrade Mill Road Yard in Peel.

The Fish Yard is a light industrial estate consisting of nineteen units of which twelve are in the ownership of the Department and these are primarily occupied in the main by seafood processing and related organisations. By the end of last year a building condition survey of the Yard had been undertaken to enable the Department to consider the future of the buildings in its ownership and where applicable, to plan remedial work in order to return the buildings into an acceptable condition.

As a result the old ice factory and one of the kipper houses have been demolished and further demolition work is planned. At the same time a programme of upgrading the electrical installations in the buildings has been initiated and remedial work is being planned.

The Department has also been ensuring that the Yard in general is cleaned up, as well as talking to existing and prospective tenants of the Yard about ongoing improvements to improve security and ensure that only authorised businesses conduct activities within the Yard.

Currently, the Department is being assisted by the Design Division of the Department of Transport to produce a development plan to identify those areas where businesses who have expressed an interest in locating to the Yard can be accommodated.

Land has been identified to meet the needs of the Manx Fish Producers Organisation who are expected to confirm the construction of fishermen’s units on a site in the Yard in the near future. These units will primarily be used to store nets and other fishing gear.

Minister for the Department, Mr. Phil Gawne, MHK, said “The ongoing work to improve and upgrade Mill Road Yard underlines the continuing priority at the Yard that the Department is determined to give to both the fishing industry as a whole and the City of Peel in particular”.
