Department introduces restrictions on countryside activity 6 August 2007

THE Department of Education has closed two centres in the countryside as part of the precautions being taken in the wake of the foot and mouth disease outbreak in the UK.

The Eary Cushlin youth adventure centre, near Dalby, which is accessible only by footpath, is closed. A private booking at the weekend was cancelled and those booked in are being advised of the situation, explained Youth and Community Adviser Mike Clague.

The Ardwhallan outdoor pursuits centre at West Baldwin is temporarily closed today on advice from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry but it is hoped to re-open it shortly.

Mr Clague said:

‘The west side of Injebreck, where Ardwhallan is sited, remains open and we are advised that we can open if we can prevent sheep entering the land and introduce bio-security measures at the entrance, so we will speak with the neighbouring farmer and try to make these arrangements in order that Ardwhallan can reopen.’

The Department’s own holiday venture scheme is among users of Ardwhallan in August. A number of users who have made private bookings are also being contacted and made aware of the situation, Mr Clague said.

He added:

‘We have also put a stop to all Duke of Edinburgh’s Award-related expeditions in the countryside until further notice.’
