Children’s Competition 17 August 2007

Between Saturday 18th August 2007 and Saturday 8th September 2007, Manx National Heritage is inviting children to take part in a creative writing competition to name the Balladoole Viking at the Manx Museum and write a short story about his life.

Model of a viking male in the new Viking GalleryInspiration for the stories and the Viking’s name can be gained from the new Viking Gallery at the Manx Museum, which includes dramatic new exhibits such as the figures of a man and woman of the Viking period dressed in reproductions of what they would originally have worn, with the weaponry and jewellery of the time. The figure of the woman is inspired by the famous Pagan Lady buried at Peel Castle, while the man, accompanied by his ‘Norse Horse’ based on a Scandinavian breed, is dressed according to evidence derived from two important burials from Balladoole in Arbory and Cronk Mooar in Jurby.

Allison Fox, MNH Curator for Archaeology explains:

“What MNH are looking for is a name for the Viking – and a short story about him. Who was he? Why and how did he get here? Was he on his own? What did he do when he got here? What did the people living here already think of him? There are lots of questions like these that can’t be answered from the archaeological evidence. That is why after reading the facts and looking at the artefacts that were found with him, children of all ages are invited to let their imagination run riot and tell the tale of what life was like for the Balladoole Viking on the Isle of Man 1100 years ago”.

Children are invited to complete their entries at the Manx Museum, including in the Bay Room Restaurant, where some Viking themed fruit smoothie drinks will be available for the duration of the competition.

The competition will be judged by Manx National Heritage and winners will receive a behind the scenes tour of the new gallery along with their family, together with £25 worth of gift vouchers. Prizes will be awarded to the winning entries in three age categories Age 5 to 8 years, Age 8 to 11 years and Age 12 to 15 years.

Entry forms to the competition can be collected at the Manx Museum Reception, at any Story of Mann attraction or downloaded from www.storyofmann.com.
