Environment Safety & Health Directorate Sponsors Local Environmental Health Student 10 September 2007

The Department of Local Government and the Environment’s Environment Safety and Health Directorate is to provide sponsorship to a local Environmental Health student.

Peel resident, Kristian Cowin, is due to commence a Post Graduate Masters Degree in Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham in September. Kristian is currently undertaking temporary employment within the Directorate, where he has supported the work of Environmental Health staff whilst gaining valuable practical experience.

The Directorate will sponsor Kristian throughout his academic studies and completion of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health practical requirements, necessary for him to become a qualified Environmental Health Officer. Kristian will also be employed within the Directorate during vacation periods.

Kristian, who is enjoying working within his chosen field of study, commented,

“The chance to gain an insight into the day-to-day practicalities of Environmental Health has already proven to be invaluable and the vacation employment will add to my experience and aid my studies. It is very difficult to obtain sponsored practical placements within Environmental Health Departments in the UK and I am very lucky to have gained this opportunity in the Island.”

Department Minister, Hon. John Shimmin MHK commented

“I am pleased that the Department was able to assist Kristian in his chosen profession and I wish him well with his academic studies. Kristian is the eighth Environmental Health student to be sponsored by the Department and we hope to continue supporting Manx students in the years to come.”
