Youngsters around the Island receive Superstar Status! 9 November 2007

Manx Sport & Recreation has recently rewarded 37 children from around the Island for showing commitment to attending a series of sports sessions over the summer holiday period.

The selected few children from Jurby, Anagh Coar, Ballasalla, Victoria Road and Willaston Schools were delighted to receive a stylish ‘MSR Superstar’ T-shirt each from the Sports Development Team, in return for their dedication in attending a programme of Multi Sport Fun Sessions at their schools over the summer.

The Sports Development Team has identified these five schools as their ‘target audience’ for increasing activity levels following a piece of demographic analysis carried out last year. It was identified that children attending these schools were not accessing MSR School Holiday Sports Schemes as frequently as those from other areas of the Island for one reason or another. Specific sports activities for children at these schools were subsequently programmed exclusively for these children to attend.

The programme consisted of a weekly Multi Sport activity session in each of these areas throughout the summer, where children could get to try out a variety of different sports activities delivered by a team of qualified and experienced MSR coaches.

Paul Bridson, Sports Development Manager, said:

‘These are not just one off ‘taster sessions’ for children to come along to. The idea behind them is that, by attending our fun and exciting sessions, these children will gain the confidence and the desire to attend other sports activities outside of the school environment, such as Manx Youth Games and Community Sports Club sessions.’

This programme of low cost, easy accessible sports sessions will continue in these five regions in the future during each of the school holiday periods. Additional sessions have also recently been launched from Manor Park School.

The prize winners will all get the chance to show off their t-shirts at the next programme of sports activities which are due to take place during the Christmas holiday period. The Sports Development Team will be attending these six schools next month with further details.
