Final modification to Peel flap gate 15 November 2007

Subject to weather conditions the final part of the modification works to the Peel flap gate are scheduled to take place between November 22nd and 24th. The swingbridge will be closed to pedestrians from 7am on Tuesday 22nd November for the duration of the works.

The work consists of removing / replacing the side seals and fitting new “dead stops” each side of the gate. These are the pieces which allow the gate, when in the raised position, to align itself for the latching pins to engage. The west side will be done on 22nd and the east side on the 23rd. On 24th the gate will be tested over the low water period to ensure that it is correctly aligned.

As with the previous works, this project is intended to take place over daytime low water periods when the flap gate would normally be raised, thereby minimising disruption to vessel. On this occasion it will however be necessary to raise or lower the flap gate up to one and a half hours earlier or later than the normal time to allow the maximum time to complete the work.

Vessels wishing to pass through the flap gate opening should contact Peel Harbour Office on 842338 during normal daytime operational hours or VHF Ch12, or Douglas Harbour Control on 686628 or VHF Ch12 at all other times for further information, such as gate opening times.

If the weather conditions prevent the works being completed in the timescale, then the duration of the work could be extended up to and including 28th November. During this extended period disruption to harbour users will be kept to a minimum.

The Department regrets any inconvenience which may be caused to both harbour users and members of the public wishing to use the swingbridge during the above period and will do its utmost to minimise the time required to complete the works.
