Eligible urged to get Flu Vaccine 13 December 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security offers Flu Vaccination to all members of the public aged 65 and over and also to those with chronic medical conditions such as Heart, Lung or Kidney disease.

Reports from some surgeries suggest that the uptake of the flu vaccine this year is down, compared to previous years. This may be partly related to the doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine.

The flu vaccine is effective and offers up to an 80% increase in protection against the virus. In the elderly, the vaccine also reduces the risk of catching pneumonia and other winter viruses.

For most people, flu is nothing but an unpleasant experience lasting 1-2 weeks. However, the flu virus can be fatal and causes a number of deaths every year, with the elderly and those with chronic medical problems the most susceptible to the deadly effects of the virus.

Advice to the public:

  • If you belong to the category eligible to receive the flu vaccination and you have not received the vaccine yet, please do not delay it any further. Please make an appointment with your surgery to receive the flu vaccine.
  • The vaccine is effective and it does not have any major side effects. It does not contain any live viruses and cannot give you flu.
  • There is no basis for the recent doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine.
