Alicia is the Winner! 27 February 2008

Alicia Oates receives her prizeThe House of Manannan Colouring competition run by Manx National Heritage has produced some really colourful entries, with almost 200 children entering the competition.

Alicia Oates, aged 10 from Sulby was selected as the winner to the competition and was presented with her prize by Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage and Dave East from Home Strategic who sponsored the competition.

Anthea Young, Manx National Heritage’s Education Services Officer commented:

“The response to the competition was fantastic and we received some really creative and colourful entries, however, there could only be one winner. Alicia’s entry really stood out and it was clear to see that she had put a tremendous amount of effort into colouring the picture of Frida the Viking and her Viking Longship”.

Alicia was delighted to receive her prize which was a new 8GB iPod nano and a Family 4 Site Pass Ticket for the Story of Mann attractions. Following the presentation Alicia also received a special tour of the new Viking Gallery at the Manx Museum!

The competition coincided with a new activity at the House of Manannan, entitled ‘The Riddle of the Runes’ in which children searched the House of Manannan for a series of symbols or runes taken from the medieval Scandinavian alphabet known as futhark. Once all the clues had been found, the riddle could be solved using a special code book, which enabled them to translate the runes into today’s letters and crack the secret code.
