Government looking at implications of "e-Borders" programme 14 March 2008

THE Government has confirmed that it is looking closely at the implications for the Isle of Man of the United Kingdom’s e-Borders programme, an integrated electronic travel monitoring system being developed over the next few years to help combat terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal immigration and other serious crime.

Following the announcement of the e-Borders strategy by the UK Home Office in March 2007, the Council of Ministers established a high level strategic group to start considering the issues. A formal invitation for the Crown Dependencies to be included in the programme was received recently.

In response to this the Council of Ministers has agreed in principle that the Island should be involved in the programme so that it can further explore the implications in detail.

Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK commented:

‘It is important that the Isle of Man engages with the e-Borders programme to ensure that the security of the Island is protected and that we are not perceived as a weak link in international defences against serious crime or immigration breaches.’
