All Island Blackout Avoided 29 May 2008

The BBC reported yesterday that hundreds of thousands of homes suffered power cuts in the UK following the unplanned shutdown of the Sizewell B Nuclear Power Plant in Suffolk which in turn caused the shutdown of Longannet coal-fired plant in Fife, Scotland. Both plants are usually connected to the grid. As a result of the faults on the main UK Network the Authority came extremely close to disconnecting the subsea link in order to protect and isolate Island consumers from the incident.

Ashton Lewis, Chief Executive, said, “Fortunately, we were able to maintain connection with the UK and once the network stabilised were able to export power off Island, both assisting UK power demands and also taking advantage of high market prices at that time, for the benefit of Island consumers”.
