Winter Reservoir Fishing for Anglers 18 July 2008

The Island’s reservoir anglers now have the opportunity to continue fishing for rainbow trout for an extended season, following approval of the Inland Fisheries (Winter Fishing) Regulations 2008 in Tynwald on 16th July 2008.

The new Regulations mean that anglers in possession of a new Winter Fishing Licence will be able to fish Sulby, Injebreck and Clypse and Kerrowdhoo reservoirs in an extension of the current fishing season from 1 November 2008 until the 31st January 2009.

Anglers wishing to fish these reservoirs during the winter months must purchase a ‘winter fishing’ licence, which will be available only from the Department’s office at Rose House in Douglas from 1st September onwards at a duty of £20.

Anglers will be able to capture and kill a maximum of two trout per day, and must only use barbless or crimped hooks.

Although the Department will not be stocking the reservoirs over the extended season, it is well known that significant numbers of rainbow trout over-winter successfully in the reservoirs, and as a result anglers have frequently asked for an extension to the fishing season.

This winter opening of selected reservoirs is on a trial basis this year, and the Department will closely monitor the level of fishing activity. If it is deemed to be a success and there is sufficient interest, then the initiative may be continued in future years.

Mr David Quirk MHK, Member for Fisheries, said: ‘I am delighted that the Department has listened to feedback from anglers and has been proactive in introducing an extended fishing season. I hope anglers will take up the opportunity to fish these reservoirs over the winter, and I look forward to reviewing its success.

The Department would like to remind anglers that they must be in possession of a valid licence at all times whilst fishing, and that current reservoir licences will not be valid for winter fishing. Anglers are also advised that they must be aware of and comply fully with the new Regulations.

Copies of all the Inland Fisheries legislation are available from the Fisheries Division, telephone 685857.
