Government agencies join together to improve patient care at airport 31 October 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security’s Ambulance and Air Ambulance Service has joined forces with the Isle of Man Ronaldsway Airport Fire Service and Airport Security to provide a new medical room at the Island’s Airport.

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“The new medical room at the airport is extremely well equipped and is a vast improvement on previous facilities. The room has been primarily established to provide comfortable and private surroundings should a patient travelling with a nurse escort be taken ill, or if there are flight delays. The room will also be used to provide first aid for airport passengers and employees.”

David Anderson MHK, Minister for Transport, said,

“This builds on the medical facilities at the Airport and I’m pleased that we’ve been able to work closely with the DHSS and Ambulance Service to provide the new room. Given the large number of people who pass through the Airport each day, it’s vital that we have the best facilities possible, should they be required.”

Russell Thornhill, Deputy Chief Ambulance Officer said,

“It was a great project to be involved with and as well as providing a much needed facility, the equipment will serve as a First Response resource to any given emergency whilst an ambulance is on route.”

Charitable funds from Noble’s Hospital have been used to fund the ambulance stretcher, cardiac monitor and a medical treatment trolley. The initiation of the project, and the training of staff on how to use the new equipment, was undertaken by Graham Lloyd-Brandrick, Lead Nurse for the Critical Care Services.
