Government launches new consultations website 12 December 2008

A new website dedicated to Government consultations with the public has been launched today (Friday December 12, 2008).

The site is designed to improve access to and awareness of consultations by making them all available in one place. It is a single source of information on all consultations.

The service has been developed at the request of the Council of Ministers following its introduction in July this year of a Code of Practice on Consultations. This sets out standard guidelines to be followed across Government - principally in relation to primary legislation, although it is also a best practice template for consultation on major policy issues.

Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK explained:

‘Consultation is an important part of the democratic system. It enables Government to gather a range of views and information to be taken into account before final decisions are made.
‘The Council of Ministers is committed to the principle of public consultation as an essential ingredient of good government, which is why the Code of Practice was introduced to bring greater clarity and consistency to this area. The consultations website is a further step to encourage public participation in this process.’
