Minister pleased to see joined-up bread making 26 June 2009

The Manx National Farmers Union invited the Minister to join a gathering of all stages of the bread production chain this week, where farmers, Laxey Glen Mills and Ramsey Bakery management teams spent the evening together to share perspective and consider how to strengthen their working relationship.

DAFF Minister, Phil Gawne MHK said: “I found the evening really inspiring; hearing farmers, mill and baker meeting together to discuss the already successful local milling wheat and bread sector and explore how they can achieve even better results. They seemed so enthusiastic and excited in the future and interested in each others’ perspectives.”

Minister added “I view the local bread production as an essential part of our local reliable food service and I am reminded of its’ importance every time the boat doesn’t sail. We are committed to working with the sector to develop new ideas and help turn some of the ideas discussed on the night into a sustainable future for our local milling wheat and bread production. The Department has recently funded an external review of the sector which is expected to report imminently and will provide suggestions for a long term business strategy to grow local flour and bread sales, both on and off the Island.”
