‘Once upon a time’ at Rushen Abbey 10 September 2009

Once upon a time at Rushen Abbey... there was an archaeologist, a monk and a dancer. To find out what happened next, visit the Abbey Interpretive Centre and Gardens on Sunday 20th September for a special story day for all the family between 10am and 5pm.

There will be themed story-telling sessions for children throughout the day, as well as craft activities such as ‘Make your own Bookmark’, illuminated writing, a ‘soul tent’ where children can enjoy stories told by a specialist storyteller and story sacks in different locations around the Abbey, which will help bring each story to life.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage commented:

"Children are invited to come dressed as a character from their favourite book and enter our special competition. Judging will take place at 2.30pm and there will be a prize for the best outfit. There will also be a book swap for both adults and children on the day, so don't forget to bring a book. Alice in Wonderland themed children’s entertainment will be provided by Mike Bell on the day, and the Friends of Manx National Heritage will be on hand to assist throughout the day".

English Romantic poet William Wordsworth visited Rushen Abbey in 1833, describing it in his diary as ‘a pretty sequestered place – thronged with Blackbirds and thrushes of extraordinary size and power of song.’ The Chronicles of the Kings of Mann and the Isles were also written at the Abbey, the first written account of the Island’s history.

So come along to Rushen Abbey, The Abbey Gardens and Interpretive Centre on Sunday 20th September for Manx National Heritage’s special ‘Once upon a time…’ book day. For more information on Manx National Heritage events and exhibitions please visit www.storyofmann.com or call 01624 648000.
