Class of 49 goes back to school 21 October 2009

SIXTY years on, the Castle Rushen High School 'class of 49' returned to the classroom.

A group of 15 ex-scholars and teachers, known as the 49ers, meets regularly, under the organisation of Joyce Corlett MBE, who started as a pupil at Castle Rushen High School in September 1949.Class of 49

The group went back to school to mark the diamond jubilee of when they started at the brand new school.

In the party were the Hon Noel Cringle MLC, President of Tynwald, who invited the group to sing the old school song, and a sprightly Walter Collister, who taught the Class of 49 when they first started and rose to be deputy headteacher.

After refreshments in the headteacher's study, the group split into their old house groups of Bradda, Langness and Scarlett to take a tour of the present-day school, led by senior students.

'Many recalled their happy memories and clearly hold a great affection for the school,' said a spokesman for Castle Rushen.

A traditional school dinner of mince, potatoes, carrot and turnip, followed by steamed syrup sponge and custard was enjoyed in the dining room.

Mrs Corlett commented:

'The visit was nostalgic and brilliant from start to finish. We appreciated the welcome extended to us by everyone involved and the courteous and kindness of the welcome was wonderful.'
