HOAX Calls to MEA Customers 26 January 2011

The MEA and Office of Fair Trading have been advised by members of the public that hoax telephone calls are being received by Island residents allegedly from the Manx Electricity Authority. The caller asks for the customer to verify the serial number on their electricity meter and then goes on to state that an emergency rate is being applied to the customer account as they have been overcharged. Customers have also been asked if it would be convenient to visit the property.

The MEA would like to advise customers that these calls are NOT from the Authority and any such calls should be reported to your local police station. If you do receive a call and are unsure, please do not hesitate to contact MEA’s Customer Services team on 687675.

The OFT also said, “The MEA have confirmed that these calls are not from them. If you get a call like this ask for a return telephone number and do not tell the caller anything until you have first checked with the business they claim to be ringing on behalf off that the calls are legitimate. If anyone calls at your door don’t let them in. Ask for their photographic identification and before you agree to give them entry to your property telephone the company they say they are working for and ask if this person is one of their employees and if they are authorised to call at your home. Don’t be afraid to challenge the caller whether on the telephone or at the door. If you are worried contact your local police station – they will be happy to help you”.
