Lady Isabella opens for Mother’s Day Weekend 16 March 2012

Make this Mother’s Day weekend extra special with a visit to the Great Laxey Wheel, the world’s largest working waterwheel and iconic symbol of our Island. Gates open for the 2012 season at 9.30am this Saturday (17 March).

Two groups of special guests have been invited to start the wheel turning; a group of young people from the recently established Manx National Heritage Youth Group named by its members as MUSEIOM and representatives from ACE sponsors, Conister Bank. ACE is the Arts Culture and Education Scheme which provides FREE admission to the national heritage sites to all Isle of Man school children in full time education.

Katie King, Community Outreach Officer for Manx National Heritage said:

“Members of the youth group are extremely excited about coming along to start the wheel turning. This is a fabulous opportunity and something we are sure they will enjoy. To mark the occasion, sweet treats will be available for all those who come along for the 9.30am opening including handmade Manx Butter Fudge and Manx Knobs, courtesy of The Original Manx Fudge Factory. Remember to bring your ACE card with you for FREE admission and if you are aged 12 or over, no need to bring an accompanying adult with you.”

In addition to the Great Laxey Wheel, the Manx Electric Railway service also gets underway from Douglas to Ramsey this weekend. Both follow the opening of Castle Rushen and the start of the Isle of Man Steam Railway service, last weekend. Cregneash, Rushen Abbey, the Nautical Museum, Old House of Keys, Old Grammar School, Peel Castle and Grove Museum will open to the public on Saturday 31 March. All sites will be open daily 10am to 4pm.
