Fenella Returns to Service 5 September 2003

At 9:30am on Friday morning the steam locomotive No.8 "Fenella" was re-introduced into service following a long period of storage and mechanical overhaul. The locomotive was last used in 1968 and has remained out of service for 35 years.

The locomotive is owned by the Isle of Man Railway and Tramway Preservation Society who financed the reconstruction and overhaul of the boiler some 5 years ago and then loaned the boiler to Isle of Man Transport for use in locomotive No.1 "Sutherland" until the chassis and mechanical components of No.8 could be overhauled to enable it to be returned to use. The chassis of Fenella has been mechanically restored by engineering firm RMS Locotech of Yorkshire and the reassembly of the locomotive undertaken in the steam railway workshops of Isle of Man Transport.

Robert Hendry of the Society, and David Howard, Director of Public Transport unveiled the plaque on the side of the train to jointly re-launched the locomotive to operational service. Fenella pulled out of Douglas station at 10am leading a special double headed train to Port Soderick.

Fenella is now availabe for general use by Isle of Man Transport hauling passenger trains.

The re-introduction of Fenella marks the start of the railway enthusiast meeting which will be running all week.
