Talk on Underwater Archaeology 25 February 2004

The author of a new book about the underwater heritage around the Isle of Man will be talking about his work at the Manx Museum, Douglas on Friday 5th March 2004 at 7.30pm. Adrian Corkill's new publication 'Shipwrecks of the Isle of Man' is the result of many years of personal research by Mr Corkill. The book contains images and stories about the wrecks around the Island, some well-known, such as the Racehorse and the Peveril, others not so well-known.

As the subject of his talk, Mr Corkill has chosen the wreck of the U246, a German U-boat sunk off the south coast of the Island during 1945. Using this wreck as an example, Adrian will talk about how to locate and research wrecks and about the experience of diving on them.

Curator of Archaeology for Manx National Heritage, Allison Fox said:

"The response to the Dive In! exhibition currently on at the House of Manannan in Peel has been very positive. The subject of our underwater heritage is of interest to many people. The chance to hear about underwater exploration and the research that can be carried out on land from an expert such as Adrian shouldn't be missed - nor should the opportunity to hear how a German U-boat sank in Manx waters."

Entry to the talk is free and open to all. Copies of the book, "Shipwrecks of the Isle of Man" will be available to purchase with 10% off the recommended purchase price and Adrian Corkill will be available after the talk to sign copies.

"Dive In! The Underwater Archaeology of the Isle of Man" is on at the House of Manannan in Peel until Sunday 25th April 2004. Entry to this part of the House of Manannan is free.
