Overnight Bat Group Meeting 21 June 2004

The Manx Bat Group will shortly be holding its, now, annual, overnight meeting, designed especially for younger people to come along and experience the adventure of locating and studying bats. The venue this year is Union Mills where several bat roosts are known and where bat workers will be staying overnight in the Union Mills Memorial Hall, meeting at 8.30 pm, Sat. 3rd July.

After an explanatory talk on the habits of bats and the use of high frequency bat detectors, bat group members will take out small parties around the village to locate and track bats emerging at dusk to feed, keeping records of which species were found where. After a late snack before retiring, members again take out parties at dawn to find bats returning to their roosts after a night's feeding.

Chairman of the Manx Bat Group, Mr Nick Pinder, said:

"We think the added adventure of a camp out increases the interest of young people and will bring in new members of the Group over time to carry on the work we've done over the last fourteen years or so. We're very pleased to continue with these camp-outs since recruiting and bringing on the younger members was a topic very close to the heart of Penny Gillman, our past chairman who sadly died late last year. We'd like to carry on the tradition in her memory."

The Manx Bat Group will welcome anyone wishing to take part but asks that children are accompanied by an adult who can be responsible for them at all times.

Anyone wishing to take part should book with Nick Pinder at the Wildlife Park, telephone 693572.
