National Archaeology Day 13 July 2004

The celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Great Laxey Wheel continue on Sunday 18th July, when Manx National Heritage hold National Archaeology Day in the company of the Lady Isabella.

Curator of Archaeology for Manx National Heritage, Allison Fox said:

"Last years event at Cregneash helped to show that archaeology isn't just about prehistory, it's about people, whatever time period they may have lived in. This year, we're looking at how industrial archaeology can tell us about an important aspect of the later history of the Island. The 150th year of the Lady Isabella gives us the perfect opportunity to hold an event at the Great Laxey Wheel.

"On National Archaeology Day, in addition to the new Mines Trail, there’ll be talks from experts on the Wheel and mining and minerals and a chance to see how the Wheel works using a working model. The whole family can have a go at a quiz for the chance to win a prize and the younger visitors can have a go at sieving and sorting mined material. They can also have their faces painted like a miner - but only if they are brave enough to enter the Old Adit!"

The Friends of Manx National Heritage will be selling cold refreshments and there will also be a special Heritage Shop for the day. The event will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 18th July. Normal admission prices apply.
