National Arts Development Strategy 7 October 2004

The Department of Tourism and Leisure will be seeking approval for the National Arts Development Strategy 2005 - 2014 at the October sitting of Tynwald.

The 10 year strategy sets out a wide-ranging number of arts objectives. This is the culmination of extensive consultation and research by the Arts Council and Professor Anthony Everitt, who has a wide background in the Arts and strategic policy.

Minister for Tourism and Leisure David Cretney, said:

"The Department, together with the Arts Council, has been working for some time on the development of a long-term vision for the Arts to complement the existing Sport & Recreation and General Leisure Strategies. I am particularly pleased that the strategy contains many new initiatives aimed at reaching the whole community, and in particular our young people.

"Tynwald approval of the strategy will of course be conditional upon the resources necessary for its implementation being subject to normal government budgetary and business planning processes. However, I would stress that much of the strategy can be implemented within existing resources."

Eddie Lowey, Chairman of the Arts Council, added:

"The strategy charts an ambitious and exciting future for Arts in the Isle of Man and I know that the Arts Council is excited about driving forward the strategy in the years ahead."

Key principals of the Strategy are:

  • Working in partnership
  • Increased community arts and arts in education
  • Skill development
  • Raising awareness of the arts especially with young people

In addition the aims of the Strategy include establishing a small-scale annual Isle of Man film festival; improving arts facilities in schools; encouraging debate on architectural standards including a biennial prize for outstanding contribution to architecture and the creation of a new visual arts exhibition space.

Copies of the National Arts Development Strategy 2005-2014 can be obtained from the Isle of Man Arts Council office, in the Villa Marina Arcade, Douglas, or here.
