Proposal to establish a Conservation Area covering part of Victoria Street, Duke Street and Athol Street 12 October 2007

In February 2007, the Department of Local Government and the Environment held an Open House at its offices in Murray House to display the proposals for the establishment of a Conservation Area covering part of Victoria Street and Athol Street in Douglas. At that time, the public was asked to complete a questionnaire to provide feedback on the proposals.

Having taken those comments into consideration, the Department now announces its intention to hold a public consultation meeting with regard to the establishment of a Conservation Area covering part of Victoria Street, Duke Street and Athol Street. The proposed area embraces most of the buildings from St George’s Walk to Victory House on Prospect Hill and down along Victoria Street, stopping at the junction of Fort Street and Cambrian Place before extending along Duke Street, stopping at Chapel Row and James Street. From here it returns to skirt King Street before taking in the building adjacent to Ridgeway Street down to the Wheatsheaf Hotel and the junction of James Street behind St. Matthew’s Church. From The Wheatsheaf Hotel it crosses Lord Street to take in The Salvation Army Citadel back up to Athol Street before merging with Shaw’s Brow and back to St. George’s Walk.

The public consultation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 24th October 2007, and will be held at Douglas Town Hall, Ridgeway Street between 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. Copies of the maps and the Character Appraisals for the proposed areas will be available on the day or by contacting the Conservation Department’s Officers in Murray House. The documents have also been posted on the Department’s website

Any queries about the proposed Conservation Area or about the grant assistance which is available for certain works to buildings within the proposed Conservation Areas should be directed to Steve Moore, the Department’s Conservation Officer, or Trevor Wilson, Assistant Conservation Officer, in Murray House.
