Department of Transport set to repair Ballagawne Bridge on A4 coast road in Michael 14 November 2007

Following a detailed inspection of the Ballagawne Bridge on the Kirk Michael to Peel coast road, the Department of Transport will shortly undertake some temporary remedial works to the existing structure.

The bridge is located 1/2 mile south of Kirk Michael. It was built to carry traffic over the old Kirk Michael to St Johns railway line and it is believed to have had no major work carried out on it since its original construction. The Department’s inspection has revealed that the iron girders at either side of the bridge have corroded and are unsuitable for continuous modern day traffic. As such, traffic has been temporily directed over the centre of the bridge, avoiding the weakened areas while the extra support is installed. The works should be completed within the next two weeks, after which time the traffic signals removed and two-way traffic reinstated.

Paul Salmon, Design Engineer, said

“we intend to develop a permanent, long-term solution for this bridge. In the meantime our current works allow the bridge to cope with the present flows of traffic along the Kirk Michael to Peel coast road”.

The Department wishes to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these essential maintenance works may cause to road users and would also advise drivers to allow extra time to complete their journeys.
