Climate change – what does it mean to me? 17 November 2005

The Department of Local Government and the Environment (the Environment Department) is to give a presentation on Climate Awareness at the Manx Museum in Douglas at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 14th December, 2005. This presentation will be open to all members of the public and to all interested parties are being encouraged to attend.

The Environment Department has commissioned a study project to assess the impact of climate change for the Island and to look at how we need to start adapting to changes in our climate. Acclimatise, a climate risk management consultancy, has been engaged to carry out the study.

Martin Hall, Director of Environment, Safety and Health, said,

“People tend to think that climate change is something in the future that will not impact on them but this presentation will cause them to think again because the effects of climate change are already in evidence and affecting us now.”

A full day Workshop for invited key stakeholders is also being arranged by the Environment Department on the following day at the Museum. Environment Minister, John Rimington, MHK, stressing the importance of the Workshop, comments,

“It is essential that all sectors and activities on the Island are considered within the study project as climate change will impact on all aspects of our lives. It is essential, therefore, that people are involved at an early stage so that they gain a better understanding of the key issues and that planning can be more effective”.
