Railway figures on track despite winter closure 9 December 2005

The Isle of Man Steam Railway operated its Santa Special trains last weekend being the end of operations on the railway until it re-opens for next Summer on 3rd April 2006.

143,736 passenger journeys were made on the Isle of Man Steam Railway in 2005, which is a similar number to those carried in the previous year, despite a slight decrease in the number of timetabled journeys to enable the operations to be performed more reliably.

On the Manx Electric and Snaefell Mountain Railways 180,458 passenger journeys were made. Again, these are similar numbers to last year, and encouraging bearing in mind the winter closure of the Manx Electric Railway to allow for the demolition of Summerland and the poor weather conditions during August.

David Howard, Director of Public Transport said: ‘We are encouraged that the passenger numbers on the railways remain buoyant. A recent customer satisfaction survey by independent consultants indicated general satisfaction with operation of the railways and the high usage of them by visitors to the Isle of Man.’

Tourism Minister David Cretney commented: ‘The figures reflect how much hard work the staff have put into promoting the railways and the Department remains committed to seeking further improvements to ensure their future.’
