Mhelliah raises 2,500 14 October 2004

The Mhelliah held on Friday 8th October at the George Hotel in Castletown raised the magnificent total of £2,500!

Perhaps the first of the 2004 season the Mhelliah was held to assist the organisers of the Southern 100 Road Races with their celebratory plans for the Golden Jubilee of the races next year in July.

Many items of road racing memorabilia were on offer, as well as the traditional Mhelliah items of fruit and vegetables, as well as cakes and flowers.

Club Chairman, Phil Taubman, one of the auctioneers, along with Manx Radio's Chris Kinley was overwhelmed with the response and generosity of all present saying:

"It is an astonishing amount of money which has been raised and on behalf of the committee, I would express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated items for the Mhelliah and we are greatly indebted to all who came along this evening and bought items of memorabilia and the other items on offer.

"The Mhelliah is an encouraging start to our fund raising to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Southern 100 next July. I would also like to thank my hosts at the George for allowing us conduct the Manx auction this evening."

Committee member Andy Clark, who took on the task of organising the Mhelliah, was equally exuberant at the end of the evening saying that he would have been happy if the final figure had reached £500 - £600!

He said:

"This amount is unbelievable and shows how highly the Southern 100 is regarded in the Island and in Castletown in particular."

Southern 100's next event is the Castletown Community Bonfire, to be held in the Paddock field on Friday 5th November, where everyone is welcome, although private fireworks are not permitted. Hot food and drinks will be available.
