Pre-TT Sets Scene for TT 2006 27 May 2006

The first practice session of the Blackford’s Pre-TT Classic Road Races, got underway on Friday evening at 6.23pm, in dry but blustery conditions.

As is the custom these days, course newcomers had a session to themselves, behind travelling marshals.

Timed practice followed, with the 250/350cc Single Cylinder machines being first to test conditions.

349cc Ducati mounted Rich Hawkins topped the leader board with a time of 3m 04.617s, a speed of 82.874mph, he was followed by Mike Hose on a 350 Bultaco at 3m 05.032s (82.688mph), with Allan Brew third on his Drixton Aermacchi at 81.008mph (3m 08.871s).

Fastest of the 250’s was Greeves Silverstone rider Paul Coward in 3m 19.103s, equal to 76.845mph. Mervyn Stratford, also Greeves mounted took 3m 24.979s to lap at 74.642mph with the first of the 4-strokes, Ducati man Roger Birkenhead third quickest at 73.863mph in a time of 3m 27.141s.

The 500cc machines were next out, with the top three only separated by less than a second. Alan Oversby on his Craven Manx Norton topped the list at 89.489mph (2m 50.971s), followed by Manx Norton mounted Chris Palmer with a time of 2m 51.302s (89.316mph) then Roy Richardson on the Bullock Honda at 89.016mph, a time of 2m 51.879s.

In the Lightweight class it was Wallasey’s Mike Hose on his 250cc Ariel Arrow who was quickest with a lap of 3m 02.308s equal to 83.924mph. Another two-stroke twin, this time a 250cc Yamaha ridden by Terry Kermode was second quickest in 3m 07.427s, 81.632mph and a Suzuki twin slotted into third in 3m 10.497s a speed of 80.316mph, ridden by John Leech Jnr.

Next up were the Post Classic’s, where last year’s race winner Chris Palmer topped the leader board with a lap in 2m 47.340s a speed of 91.431mph. Huddersfield’s Bill Swallow on the FCL Aermacchi was next in 2m 50.405s, equal to 89.786mph, with 500cc provisional pole sitter Alan Oversby third fastest at 89.240mph, with a time of 2m 51.448s.

The final solo session for 350cc machines, was headed by Mike Hose, this time on a Honda at 86.577mph, a time of 2m 56.721s. Paul Coward followed Mike on another Honda, with a time of 2.58.402s, (85.761mph). Then came Aermacchi mounted Bill Swallow at 85.673mph, with a time of 2m 58.587mph.

The Sidecar session was red flagged due to a serious incident between Ballakaighan and Ballabeg. With the road closing order coming to an end, the session was called off for the evening.
